What is the most effective way of learning Italian from scratch?

November 18th, 2009 | by admin |

I’m a native English speaker and would love to be confidently fluent in Italian in a few years so that I can do my medical elective in Italy. What is the best way of learning the language from scratch to becoming confidently fluent in around 3 years?? What sort of resources would I need? How should I be taught?

I have been down that road. I too once spoke no Italian but now I am fluent. My blog should give you a few ideas on how to begin – http://www.my-italy-piedmont-marche-and-more.com/learn-italian.html

The best method for learning languages is immersion. So here is a good excuse for taking a long trip to Italy! If you cannot do that, find a Berlitz home course and advertise for an Italian speaker to meet with to practice. Craig’s list or Yahoo Answers might help you find someone.

In 2003 my husband (who is a AmE native speaker) came to Italy for 9 month with an exchange program and he became really quite fluent.
After that he went back to the US, but came back here after two years and in one year he achieved amazingly good results. I think now most people don’t even notice that he’s not a native unless they talk to him for a long time (because every now and then he says something vaguely awkward).. right now he’s in the living room discussing politics in Italian with my mom :D .
So here is my suggestion, come to Italy and speak! Also.. he says that it helped him a lot reading books in Italian that he had already read in English.
