German is definitely much more useful and widespread. If you like the language, go ahead. Personally, I couldn't learn it to save my life, too difficult xD
References :
hey,

I'm Italian but studied German..

To be honest German is one of the most difficult European languages, it's really hard and complicated. I'm not saying Italian is easy, it is certainly harder than English but still easier than German.

As a matter of fact German will probably be more useful to you during your life as it is the most important language in the European Union after English and French. While Italian is a little less important(=useful).

So, if you are willing to spend a lot of time and energy on a language then go for German. If you think you don't have time or energy enough then try Italian. It's still more difficult than English but it will take away a little less effort.

And, IMO, Italian sounds FAR better than German.
References :
Native Italian speaker, and i studied English French and German

I think if you were interested in business or philosophy or something, I'd learn German. If you were interested in art or literature or something, I'd go with Italian. I'm not sure which one would be more "prestigious" - probably depends on who you're impressing.
References :
If you are in a restaurant in almost any part of Europe, and you order in German, the waiter will spit in your soup. If you order in Italian, he will just pinch your wife's behind.
References :
you could barter a deal on a bmw or mercedes in german, but a lamboughini, or ferrari in italian.

french is said to be the language of love - but it isn't. try italian. write something you want to say to a future gf. such as, your eyes are sparkling like the stars of the night. i love you. then ask it to be translated, in person because you need to hear it, into german, and then italian. when you hear it in german, you can understand why hitler always looked angry. he never got lucky because he couldn't sweet talk his ava. since he always sounded so harsh, why should she give him anything.

ok just kidding about the hitler thing. sorry germans, i find your language sounds so harsh. and i do have some german heritage.
