What is a good German movie for an American learning German?
November 9th, 2009 | by admin |Although I’m just now starting to learn German, I consider myself pretty good at learning languages and would like to immerse myself quickly by listening to/watching movies.
I watched ‘The White Rose’ in German with English subtitles and really liked it, and could understand a little of the German.
Do you have any other recommendations?
On a different note – do you recommend Rosetta Stone?
Thanks!
It’s spelled "Das Boot", a 3 hour movie about a submarine. I don’t think I’ve ever sat through the whole damn thing, lol.
I’d suggest some more recent ones like:
Lola rennt (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0130827/ )
Gegen die Wand (very good http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0347048/ )
Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408777/ )
Alles auf Zucker (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416331/ )
Der Himmel über Berlin (very good http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093191/ )
Good bye, Lenin (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0301357/ )

Das Boot is a classic, and for good reason.Der Untergang (a.k.a Downfall) is another excellent one.
Check IMDB, there are bound to be dozens, if not hundreds.
Hope this helps.

Das Boot is a great movie and it’s a fascinating story as well. Also, you will hear a variety of german accents, which is kinda funny.
Knocking on heaven’s door is a famous movie with Til Schweiger, it’s funny but it has depth as well.
If you want to have a laugh or two, try "Der Schuh des Manitu" (Manitou’s Shoe), it’s a westerncomedy with the main characters speaking a light bavarian accent (it can be understood though).
If you like black and white movies, try "Die Feuerzangenbowle", it’s a classic with Heinz Rühmann. It’s a comedy that focuses on a grown man who returns to school to play pranks.
"Im Westen nichts Neues" (All Quiet on the Western Front) is another classic black and white movie. It’s based in WWI at the western front, you will again be able to hear a wide variety of german accents, even some that have become extremely rare.

I am also new at learning German (well, will be two years learning in August) and I’ve just started immersing myself in German films, and I’ve watched three so far, all of which I thought were good!
Sophie Scholl (definitely the best of the three)
Die Welle (The Wave)
Goodbye, Lenin.
Viel Glück!
