Free is good but not good enough if you are committed. Rocket French is good, especially at improving your speaking skills. You may not "learn to speak French confidently in less than 8 weeks" as advertised but I have experienced it myself for other languages (I am "always" learning new languages): it works as long as you devote sufficient time (15 minutes or so, daily). You can download the program or buy the hard copy. Once you follow the program and are comfortable with the fundamentals of French grammar and comfortable speaking French, find a language exchange partner online (MSN ...) to practice some more and you will be fine! Oh and do not forget to read. The more you read (of course, plenty of material on line!), the more vocabulary and the more grammar you learn. You never read enough! Make it fun: read about things you are interested in. Or make it useful: read about news, etc. And at the same time, you may actually learn about French culture. I saw a bit about them on NBC Nightly News and tried out the Italian course (my family originates from Sicily) and their memory methods were great for me. I am good with Italian and for fun I tried to learn a little German and have a basic grasp of words and phrases. I took Spanish for 3 years in High School and my level of understanding of that language = the level I was at after 8 weeks of using this program, NO JOKE! I have forgotten most of my spanish now but not Italian or German.
