What can I gain if I learn this language? Share your views. Someone says learning Italian is a waste of time. I feel so sad because I love Italian culture. What should I do? Extra Question ) My Chinese parents say , ” You are not living in Europe. Therefore, learning italian is useless for you. ” They say I am a loser “You don’t know distinguish what is good or bad to you . ”
OMG, italian is NOT A WASTE OF TIME!!!!! but i totally believe you that someone on here would say that. everytime there is a question like ‘how do you say this in any language?’ or ‘what language do you speak?’ when me or other people say italian, people will thumb us down for no reason! italian is NOT a waste of time, they assume that because it is very close to latin, that italian is dead like latin. NOT SO!!!!!! and i went on vacation to california and i came into contact w/ many italians that spoke it!!! i swear!!! not to mention, i speak it!!! and i have italian family living in california (more in italy though). but also another misconception is that italian is only spoken in italy. italian is spoken in italy, switserland, the us, canada, argentina, france, germany, greece, even a little in africa and austrailia!!! it is only MOSTLY spoken in italy. but you should find SOME italian speakers evrywhere you go in the world. for crying out loud i found some in california!!!!! 70 million italian speakers in the world are still a lot of people to talk to! lol italian is beautiful!!! whoever said it is a waste is just jealous because they know everyone wants to vacation in italy or learn the language. not very many people WANT to learn say like spanish, they just do because they need it. ITALIAN IS JUST AS BEAUTIFUL AS CHINESE, SPANISH AND FRENCH!!!!! it is no less! it is beautiful, it is cool, and hip and chic, and wonderful, how dare they call it a waste of time!!!!!! it is not the worst language on earth!!!!!!!!!!!! i dedicate this song to italian: Non è giusto, non è vero Non è un mostraccione solo un poveraccio ma in italiano se di più, l’italiano ha molto più! OHHH!!!! and also, consider this: if italian is such a waste of time, why is it the 3rd or 4th most commonly taught language in the u.s.? do tell me!!! ANDDDD, if you know italian, you can actually get some!!! oh and PS!!!: dude, you seriously need to call child services on your abusive parents!!!! regarding marla’s answer: NEVER…..EVER use spanish as a substitute for italian. never ever just assume you can speak streight spanish in italy and italians will understand you 99%. they are not THAT similar. they are similar, but there are more differences than similarities. marla’s answer is the equivalent of saying “well, english and german are both germanic languages and are very similar. so i guess that means when i go to germany this summer, i’ll just speak english to the germans, and they’ll understand english 99%.’ italian and spanish are NOT the same language, neither are they almost the same. think i’m bulshìtting?: let’s compare! english: My head hurts. italian: La mia testa fa male. french: Ma tête fai mal. spanish: Mi cabeza duele. Put it on the table. Mettelo sul tavolo. Mette-vous sur table. Ponelo en la mesa. Look at my face. Guarda la mia faccia. Reguarde-vous ma face. Mira mi cara. My sister is beautiful. Mia sorella è bella. Ma soeur est belle. Mi hermana es hermosa. more più plus más again ancora encore otra vez too much troppo trop demasiado cousin cugino cousin primo etc. italian and french are SO MUCH closer: 1. italian and french share 89% lexical similarity 2. italian – catalan: 87% 3. italian – sardinian: 85% 4. italian – SPANISH: 82% 5. italian – rheto-romance and portugues: 78% 6. italian – romanian: 77% don’t just assume spanish italian are practically the same. spanish is only the FOURTH closest to italian, AFTER french, catalan, and sardinian!

———————–

Hello, I am a high school sophomore and am currently taking a Spanish class. I want to become a doctor who travels to different countries, and I heard that by learning Spanish, the other Latin-based languages will be easier to learn. Is this true? If so, I definitely want to try learning those languages too, but I should take it one language at a time…right? Any information will be useful to me, thanks in advance!

Basically, yes
All of the romance language do the sound the same, but are very different when spoken or written. Confusion often occurs, which is why you want to learn each language separately at its own time.

I suggest you learn Spanish completely
Then take Portuguese, the closest language to Spanish
Then finally Italian
If you would like to French is also similar to the rest of the romance languages, and you could take that into consideration hence the use of French in the continents of North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and certain Asian countries

I am a native English speaker, no spanish or other language background. I am deciding between French Italian or Chinese to learn. Whichever I choose is where I will be focusing my study abroad for the next 2 years. Should I just weigh out which language to take on its economic status, therefore Chinese? I am least interested in China and its culture but I think I would benefit from it more in the future.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Although Chinese seems to be the logical conclusion, you should consider few more points.

1) There are 1000s of Chinese students in USA and Canada who are studying economics and similar topics and they will have an advantage over you. They speak English well and Chinese very well. You are never going to compete at the same level.

2) There are fewer French and Italian people who can speak English as good as you do, this would be your big advantage. Also they are much easier languages to learn, and more fun.

3) Italian is more phonetic than French and has an easier pronunciation, so 2 years in Italy would allow you to learn it very well and to experience one of the most rich cultures in the world.

My suggestion: Italian, you will do very well by choosing the less chosen road. It would be good to take a crash Italian course in USA now, just to see how comfortable you are.

good luck! ciao

I’ve heard of livemocha… And I do like it because it helps me review French and Spanish, but is it good for teaching yourself a language for free?

I already know Russian and French, and I’m taking Spanish right now… So I thought I’d learn Italian while waiting to graduate from high school so I can take Japanese. =)

Also, I’m 15… is that too young to teach myself a foreign language without a teacher near-by to help me?

The first two answerers have given you good responses. I listened to podcasts to go over Mandarin this summer, and though I could’ve used some practice to use what I learned, it helped a lot with my pronunciation. Rosetta Stone’s a little expensive, though it teaches you vocabulary by just using visuals (instead of English translations), so it helps you think in the language. If you’ve got the money for it, it’s pretty cool. As for Live Mocha, I’ve never personally used it, but I’ve heard good things about it.

There’s also a great dictionary I use all the time, called WordReference: http://www.wordreference.com/enit/

They also have a great forum here: http://forum.wordreference.com/

And a verb conjugator here: http://www.wordreference.com/conj/ITverbs.asp

I’m sure that’ll help you in your studies, but bear in mind to really learn it, you’ll need to practice speaking it (as that’s ultimately that’s the best test of your knowledge, not just reading foreign novels and writing emails to penpals).

You’re never too young to learn a foreign language! Bear in mind that you learned your mother tongue when you were just months old, without any previous experience or knowledge on how to learn languages. The fact you’ve already started learning other languages proves to me that you’ve got a great interest in languages, which will help you retain your zest for daily studying, which is something most people fail to understand is important to learning a language thoroughly. I’m sure you’ll be just fine, and feel free to stop back here if you have any questions about any language!

In bocca al lupo! ("Good luck!")

I am considering either german gcse or an italian gcse. What would be better, and what would seem more prestigious when i get on to a-level.

hey,

I’m Italian but studied German..

To be honest German is one of the most difficult European languages, it’s really hard and complicated. I’m not saying Italian is easy, it is certainly harder than English but still easier than German.

As a matter of fact German will probably be more useful to you during your life as it is the most important language in the European Union after English and French. While Italian is a little less important(=useful).

So, if you are willing to spend a lot of time and energy on a language then go for German. If you think you don’t have time or energy enough then try Italian. It’s still more difficult than English but it will take away a little less effort.

And, IMO, Italian sounds FAR better than German.

I’m an American and am prepared to spend the month of June anywhere in Italy, learning basic Italian. I’ve never taken a class in Italian before. I’m open to living in any city but would probably prefer someplace like Florence, Siena, or Bologna. Rome would also be ok.

I have rated a number of schools and I reckon the best place is the Dante Alighieri school in Mondavio. There are a couple of other great places that I have checked out :

http://www.my-italy-piedmont-marche-and-more.com/learn-italian.html

You need to be careful though as I first studied Italian in Florence and learnt nothing – huge classes and in a city where everyone spoke English. In Mondavio virtually no one speaks English so you are forced to speak Italian and the school is fantastic. It will definitely remain forever with you as an experience of a lifetime.
