I am a foreign exchange student and am really behind. The headmaster at my new german school didnt like my limited vocab. any place that can help me out?

I’m half German, and I do speak it well. The best thing to do is get a one on one teacher so he/she can test your pronunciation and you can ask questions and talk with him/her in German and practice. That help a lot. Maybe get a German computer CD so you can learn is faster by doing games. If you get a teacher, ask to give you a big list of vocabulary. That’s what my teacher did(mostly just verbs).

Here are some websites that might help you. I hope you learn German fast! It’s tricky, but fun!

Auf Wiedersehen!Hoffnung das hilft!

http://www.languageguide.org/deutsch/

http://www.serve.com/shea/vocab2.htm(this site gives links to other sites)

EDIT:
I found another website. I’m not sure how much German you know. But I’ll just give you the link anyways.

http://www.mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au/la/lote/german/materials/grammar/strongvbs/strongv1.htm

EDIT:
Here’s also another site.

does anyone know a way in which i could teach myself the language???
that would be SUPER!
thanks=)

In iTunes there’s a language section of the podcasts. Look for "My Daily Phrase German". This can help. Also try asking and answering questions on Y!A to test your self. I hope I helped! Thanks for always answering my questions! =) Happy Easter

Oh yeah, and at some places you can buy german books. You might be able to get cheap ones from like Good Will or somewhere.

I am taking German next year in school but I am very anxious and want to get a head start. Any pointers or ways to get ahead?

Na gut! Jeder soll Deutsch lernen, oder?

I’ll second the recommendation for livemocha.com. They have pretty good lessons, it’s totally free, and you can talk to other people on there who are also learning or who know more than you do. You can also help people learn the languages you already know if you get tired of studying and want to help someone else out.

Oh, and you’ll need to know http://dict.leo.org if you need an online dictionary. I use that one all the time and it’s helped me through some really tough academic German, so it’s got everything you’ll need. Plus, it’s linked in with canoo.net, which has tons and tons of conjugation and declination charts and all kinds of other awesome grammar stuff that’s helpful in a pinch.

I am 25, male . I can speak English, French, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish fluently
I am just wondering if I should enrol the Goethe-Institut German course.

Of course you should! I mean, German is a great language. It is the most spoken one in Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, some parts of Holland and Sweden), which are such big countries.

The advantages: it is very similar to English in some aspects. It’s a challenging language. It sounds lovely! And it will give you the opportunity of comunicating with many people in Europe. It’s important in the business field.

Disadvantages: it is very complex. The grammar is abundant, very extended, but I think it’s all worth it. You should be able to manage it anyway!

I speak Spanish, French, English and German has been like a miracle/wonder to me!! I just love foreign languages. And I guess you do too. So go for it.

I wish you lots of luck! Do it!

Whenever I hear people speak in German it sounds so cool! I am thinking about taking a German Language course next year. So anything you may know would be very helpful!

I’m currently in a German language course. It is easy once you get the hang of it’s sentence structure, as the language is not difficult to read and write (very phonetic, unlike English).

It is definitely worth learning, as it can be used not only in Germany, but also in many parts of the EU. Some countries (apart from Germany) also make the language a requirement for job applications.

All said, even if you intend to learn it for fun, I say go for it! Because knowledge is never wasted.

I’m looking to possibly take an introductory course in German. I know they are both Germanic languages and have some words in common so I was wondering how easy it is to pick up. Thanks in advance

German is a very difficult language. The fact that English and German are both Germanic languages will be of little help, as the German grammar is very complex, with particularities that do not exist in English.

The fact that some words are similar is of no help at all. So what: father is vater, mother is mutter. Big help!

However, I do advise you to take an introductory course. You will not be able to speak the language, but it will open your mind to another world.

But I find Pimsleur really only prepared me for the Basics of the Langauge and was lacking in Vocab.

Access newspapers like "Berliner Morgenpost" on the net and start reading ordinary news and feature articles. Translate as many unknown words as possible.
Access http://www.leo.org and start looking up as many colloquial and idiomatic expressions as possible, including commonly used slang.
Access dating sites where Germans participate as read some of their comments: these are often written in colloquial or slang, too, and you’ll get a good grasp of everyday language that way.

Does anyone know any kind of online tutor that I can buy or use for free? I kinda wanna be fluent, but just for now I wanna learn the basics.
Thanks to all the German lovers
Danke

i have a B.A. in German. i’m not a fan of learning languages on the computer. it’s a process that you have to immerse yourself in, and you can’t always have the computer with you.

i would suggest buying pocketbooks that deal with german phrases to refresh your memory. as you become more comfortable with them, start learning the grammar rules behind the phrases. over time, you’ll build your vocabulary and increase your understanding of the grammar structure.
